Why Turkey for laser eye surgery?
It is easy to understand why Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, is the destination of potential laser eye patients.
The cost of laser eye surgery in a Turkish laser clinic is less than half of the price of eye centers in the UK or other European countries. Compared to the prices in Switzerland, the cost savings are even greater.
Turkish ophthalmologists have an excellent reputation worldwide in the field of refractive surgery (laser eye and cataract surgery).
The first patients in Turkey were freed from their vision problems using laser eye surgery over 35 years ago. The doctors treating them have a correspondingly high level of experience.
Over 480 hospitals and specialist clinics provide medical care in the global metropolis of Istanbul. There are around 40 different eye clinics.
Eye Clinic Checklist
We understand that choosing a particular eye center is not easy, especially for people who are not from the area. For this reason, it is helpful to use certain selection criteria as a guide.
We would like to provide you with a checklist so that you can make an informed decision after considering all the relevant aspects.

Does the Turkish eye clinic specialize in treating foreign patients? Is there German-speaking support (interpreter) on site at the laser clinic?
- Does the doctor speak English?
- Does the eye clinic work with an agency that organizes the entire trip to Turkey?
- Does the eye clinic have internationally recognized quality and seals of approval, such as a TÜV or ISO certificate?
- Does the clinic specialize in laser eye surgery or is it a general hospital with a department for laser eye surgery? Specialized eye clinics that have focused on this area for many years are preferable.
- Do the laser devices used meet modern standards, such as the laser system from the German world market leader Carl Zeiss? What year were the laser systems built? The devices should not be older than 5 years.
- Which laser eye methods are offered? Are the procedures that are considered standard in the UK, such as iLasik and ReLEx Smile, used? You should avoid the Lasik method with the microkeratome (knife) – the modern standard today is Lasik with the femtosecond laser (IntraLase). You should be careful with offers under 1000 euros: this is usually Lasik surgery with the knife.
- Is a free airport transfer offered?
- Is it possible to stay overnight in a hotel close to the clinic?
- Is there a contact person after the Lasik surgery when you are back home?
Considering these points should serve as a good guide for you in making your decision.
BATI GÖZ Eye Clinic in Istanbul
We, as the Health Travels agency, also used this checklist as a basis when we chose the BATI GÖZ Eye Clinic in Istanbul as our partner clinic.
The BATI GÖZ Eye Center is one of the most renowned eye clinics in Turkey. The laser clinic with locations in Istanbul and Izmir is TÜV Rheinland and ISO9001 certified.
The German company Carl ZEISS has awarded the eye clinic the title of “Center of Excellence” because the entire eye laser system, including the VisuMax femtosecond laser, and all diagnostic devices come from ZEISS.
A ZEISS team installed the devices in the clinic in Istanbul and they are regularly maintained and calibrated according to strict specifications.
Carl Zeiss VisuMax & MEL90 Laser System
The showpiece of the laser clinic is the latest generation Carl Zeiss VisuMax Femtolaser 800 in combination with the MEL90 excimer laser.
This technological infrastructure enables the implementation of the most modern treatment methods such as iLASIK as well as the innovative and minimally invasive Relex Smile operation (Smile PRO).

The company ZEISS, the world market leader in laser technology, has launched the VisuMax, a femtosecond laser that combines outstanding incision precision, unrivalled speed and a gentle treatment method.
The VisuMax laser offers the possibility of lasering individually cut intracorneal tunnel segments, which forms the basis for the implementation of the Relex Smile treatment method – namely the laser without flap.
During the procedure, the VisuMax laser creates a so-called lenticule through a 3D cut, which is then removed by the surgeon through a minimally invasive channel.
In classic Femto-LASIK, the ZEISS Excimer Laser MEL90 is used, which is responsible for removing the corneal layers.
Unique product features such as the FLEXIQUENCE switching function, the new Triple-A ablation profile and an excellent intraoperative ablation speed of up to 1.3 seconds per diopter open up new treatment perspectives.
The corneal topography is carried out using the Zeiss Atlas 9000 topography system or the SIRIUS topography system.
This information from the wavefront analysis flows into the further treatment with the MEL90 Excimer, which always guarantees wavefront-guided ablation of the cornea. Each laser treatment is precisely tailored to the patient’s corneal profile.
TÜV Rheinland certified
Another unique selling point is the award of the TÜV Rheinland certificate.

The requirements and criteria for the TÜV seal are continuously checked through regular quality audits.
With the PROKS certificate, the Bati Göz Eye Clinic also has the highest Turkish quality seal for medical facilities.
The medical team
All doctors continuously participate in international congresses and continuing education courses in order to stay up to date in the field of ophthalmology and refractive surgery.
In addition, the CARL ZEISS company organizes regular in-house training courses to train all of the clinic’s medical staff in the technological developments of all diagnostic and refractive surgical systems (e.g. Carl Zeiss VisuMax or MEL90).
All of our patients are treated by the ophthalmologists Dr. Ercument Bozkur and Dr. Methiye Önder. Both are senior physicians at the Istanbul location and high-volume surgeons with an average number of around 1,000 operations per year.
Treatments provided:
- Relex Smile
- Wavefront-Femto-Lasik (iLasik)
- PRK / LASEK
- Lens implantation: multifocal lenses & trifocal lenses
- Corneal crosslinking
- Corneal ring implants
English-speaking support
Before you arrive, you will receive advice in a detailed telephone conversation with Mr. Mathias Weber from Health Travels. Eye surgery is only recommended if it actually makes sense in the individual case.
Booking the appointment at the clinic and reserving the hotel are also done entirely through the Health Travels agency.
During your stay, you will be looked after by our colleagues Dorothea, Canan and Seyda. They speak fluent German, Turkish and English and are always at your side during the preliminary examination and during the operation.
They will then explain to you exactly how to take the eye drops after the treatment. You will also receive the complete itinerary for the trip, the drip plan and all important contact details in advance in the form of a checklist by email.
The Health Travels headquarters are also in Istanbul, not far from the Bati Göz Eye Clinic. A German employee is therefore always within reach.
