I never would have expected everything to go so smoothly. From the driver to the on-site coordinators and the doctors, the entire team was very friendly, reliable, and professional. I could hardly believe my luck when I woke up the day after the surgery and, for the first time in my life, could see clearly right away.
As a flight attendant and frequent traveler, contact lenses and glasses have always been a significant limitation for me. The laser surgery has improved my quality of life immensely, and I would definitely count it among the best decisions I have ever made.

Why choose Turkey for laser eye surgery?
High quality at affordable prices
Do you rely on vision aids like glasses or contact lenses to see clearly?
And are you considering laser eye surgery to finally enjoy activities like swimming in the pool, skiing, or diving in the sea without needing glasses?
But you don’t see why you should spend over 3,000 euros or more for a laser eye treatment.
Then you’re not alone in thinking that way.
Just like travel blogger Franziska Reichel, more and more people who wear glasses or contact lenses are choosing to have their vision corrected in Turkey.
Laser eye surgery in Turkey offers many benefits for patients.
In addition to significantly lower costs for a LASIK procedure, another reason is the extensive experience in laser eye surgery, especially in the eye clinics of Istanbul, the hub of medical tourism in Turkey.
Additionally, there is the opportunity to combine the eye surgery with a short vacation. The vibrant city of Istanbul or the sun-drenched Antalya are definitely worth visiting at least once.
Laser Eye Surgery Turkey Cost
Laser eye surgery is a private service and is not covered by public health insurance.
Therefore, the costs must be borne by the patient.
However, laser eye surgery in the UK or other contries in Europe is not exactly affordable.
For instance, a Femto-LASIK procedure costs around 1,500 euros per eye, while a ReLEx Smile procedure starts at approximately 2,500 euros per eye.
Not everyone has 3,000 euros or more readily available.
Patients can save up to two-thirds on laser eye surgery in Turkey.
If you compare the prices with Turkey, you’ll find that you can save up to two-thirds of the cost of the operation.
For example, a Femto-LASIK procedure for both eyes in Istanbul costs around €1,390. And this price is all-inclusive, except for the flight.
This price also includes all necessary pre- and post-operative examinations at the eye clinic. In many cases, even the costs for hotel accommodation and airport transfers are already covered as part of all-inclusive packages. Only the costs for the round-trip flight need to be covered by the patient.
Cost (per eye) | Turkey | Europe |
---|---|---|
Femto-Lasik / iLasik | from 700 Euro | from1500 Euro |
Relex Smile | from 1100 Euro | from 2500 Euro |
PRK / LASEK | ab 700 Euro | from 1000 Euro |
When it comes to laser eye surgery prices in Europe, it’s important to note that additional costs may arise for necessary pre- and post-operative examinations.
Furthermore, in many eye clinics and laser centers, the final price of the procedure is determined based on the patient’s degree of visual impairment. The higher the diopters, the higher the cost. For example, for a person with myopia of -6 diopters, Femto-LASIK can cost around €4,000 for both eyes.
This is not the case in Turkey: the cost of laser eye surgery is fixed regardless of the severity of the patient’s visual impairment.
Is a preliminary examination in your home country necessary?
Is it advisable to undergo a preliminary examination at an eye clinic or with an ophthalmologist before traveling to Turkey?
This is a very common and valid question, as you might find out in Turkey that you’re not eligible for laser eye surgery.
According to statistics, the likelihood of being deemed unsuitable for laser surgery is extremely low. On average, only 2% of patients are found ineligible due to eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, keratoconus, or a cornea that is too thin.
Thanks to innovative procedures like the ReLEx Smile method by Carl Zeiss, patients who were considered unsuitable 10 years ago due to thin corneas can now be treated. The ReLEx Smile procedure is a minimally invasive method that places only minimal stress on the cornea.
For those who want to be certain before traveling, a so-called “quick check” is recommended. This is offered by many laser centers, such as Care Vision or EuroEyes. Typically, this examination is even free of charge. However, no documentation is provided; you are simply informed whether or not you are suitable for laser surgery. This can save you the significant costs of up to €200 for a comprehensive preliminary examination at an eye clinic.
Procedure of Laser Eye Treatment in Turkey
A laser eye treatment can be performed at any time of the year. However, those who enjoy swimming in the sea or pool during the summer should schedule the surgery for spring or autumn.
For allergy sufferers who are heavily affected by hay fever in late spring or early summer, it is recommended to undergo the laser procedure during the colder months. Incidentally, flight prices are often significantly cheaper during this time.
If the trip to Turkey is solely for the purpose of laser surgery, the stay can be planned very briefly with just 2 nights and 3 days. The specific procedure is as follows:
Day 1: Arrival & Check-in in the hotel
Day 2: Examination & Surgery
Day 3: Post-op Controle and Return Flight
It is advisable to stay for a total of 3 or 4 nights.
Firstly, this provides some buffer time to revisit the eye clinic in case any discomfort arises.
Secondly, it offers the opportunity to combine the procedure with a short vacation.
The metropolitan city of Istanbul is a stunning destination with incredible sights such as the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, and the Grand Bazaar. A boat tour on the Bosphorus, the strait between Asia and Europe, is also highly recommended.
Popular Destinations & Eye Clinics in Turkey
Istanbul is a hub for medical tourists from around the world. For over two decades, hundreds of patients from Europe have traveled monthly to this city, spanning two continents, for eye surgeries.
Why is Istanbul particularly sought after for laser eye treatments?
The reason lies in the extensive experience of doctors in the field of refractive surgery. Within Europe, Turkey was the first country (and Istanbul the first city) to begin correcting vision issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism using laser technology. This also marked the start of laser tourism, as the cost of these surgeries in Turkey was, and still is, significantly lower than in other European countries.
One well-known eye clinic in Istanbul is the Bati Göz Eye Center.
In addition to Istanbul, the holiday destinations of Antalya and Izmir are also popular choices for laser eye patients. Many travelers take advantage of their trip to the Mediterranean to have the laser procedure done at the end of their stay.
Not least, the Turkish capital, Ankara, is also a sought-after destination for laser eye treatments. Especially Turkish citizens living in Germany often combine the eye surgery with a visit to their family.
Laser eye surgery in Alanya, Side, and Kemer
If you’re vacationing in Alanya, Side, or Kemer, it’s best to visit one of the nearest eye clinics in Antalya.
